We are looking for several professional writers to produce editorial content on the music and musical cultures of 200 countries. The assignment requires writing one article per country (1,500 to 2,000 words) following detailed guidelines, with an emphasis on traditional, folk, indigenous, and classical forms. We won't ignore pop music, but it will be described in the context of its relation to local traditions.

You should be personally knowledgeable about a wide range of music and international cultures. You don't have to be a virtuoso musician yourself, but you do need to be an expert writer and researcher with a good ear and a strong interest, if not background, in music, as well as a good grasp of cultural history and geography. Ideally, you have extensive travel experience, and know the difference between samba and rumba, between a santur and a qanun, between qawwali and kecak, and between a griot and a dalang. If you have particular expertise in a region, let us know.

Our audience ranges from engaged secondary-school students to international scholars; content for these articles needs to be approachable, detailed, and thorough without being overly academic.

Please have existing published work to your credit (commercial Web content preferred), and include writing samples with your application. You'll also need to be an expert in Internet research, and be able to gauge the reliability of sources and information. Additionally, you must be able to synthesize information from a variety of sources, and craft concise, unambiguous, elegant, and grammatically sound sentences.

We have very specific instructions for content, structure, length, and style. We will send you a detailed assignment sheet, a house style guide, and a completed sample article. Note that we do regular checks for copyright infringement.

Pay is $.06/per word for text requiring only a brief copy edit and proofing. This is a freelance job, and you can work from anywhere--we currently have writers based around the world, from Prague to Shanghai to San Francisco. Payment can be sent via Paypal if requested; we generally make payments on a weekly basis.
