Writers in any genre to undertake a four-week regional writing residency. Residencies are offered at Lake St Clair, Tas; Kangaroo Island, SA; Rockhampton, Qld; Orange, NSW; Geraldton, WA, and Bruny Island, Tas.

Accommodation, airfares/travel, and a small stipend are included. These new residencies have been established to support Australian writers who wish to work in regional areas or with regional communities. Writers are asked to select one region suited to their project and to articulate the reasons for their choice. Writers will be expected to engage with the community during their stay with at least two events or workshops and have and specific writing outcome from their stay.

The program is a partnership between Writing Australia, the Copyright Agency, State Writers’ Centres, regional councils and various philanthropic supporters.

Applications are online only and must be received by 5pm on Monday 2 July. Successful writers will be announced end of July.

PLACES

PLACES is one of the five flagship programs for Writing Australia designed to connect Australian writers and regional communities.

Six residencies will be offered in 2012 providing time, space and community contact for writers with a four-week stay in a regional area of Australia. Residencies will be offered in NSW , South Australia, Tasmanian, Queensland and WA

Writers will be invited to apply online during June 2012 through the Writing Australia website. Airfares, transport and accommodation will be covered plus a range of personal contacts to ensure ready access to the community.

This program will link Australian writers, Writers’ Centres and regional communities throughout Australia. This National program will be managed by the Tasmanian Writers’ Centre for Writing Australia. 


APPLICATIONS

Places – Writing Australia’s national regional residency program is one of our flagship programs to support writers throughout the country. The program provides successful applicants with the opportunity to work and live in a range of four-week residencies in regional Australia. Up to six residencies will be offered in 2012. The program is a partnership between Writing Australia, the Copyright Agency Ltd and various regional councils and state funding bodies.

Writers are asked to select one region suited to their project and to articulate the reasons for their choice. Writers will be asked to participate in at least two community events during their stay through artist talks, community workshops, master classes, readings or other activities. The community events will be agreed upon before commencement of the residency.

Accommodation and airfares/travel to the region will be covered plus the payment of a small weekly stipend for the four weeks. The type of accommodation varies from region to region. Please see the region information sheet for more detail.

RESIDENCIES ARE AVAILABLE IN 2012 AT:
  • Lake St Clair or Bruny Island, Tasmania
  • Kangaroo Island SA
  • Rockhampton Qld
  • Orange NSW
  • Geraldton WA

Writers in any genre are invited to apply. Applicants must be over the age of 18.

SELECTION

The selection of applicants is based on literary merit. A secondary consideration will be the suitability of their writing project to the region chosen. Applications will be shortlisted and the final selection made by representatives from the national advisory group and invited guests from the writing community.

The selection criteria are based on the program requirements as outlined below.

THE APPLICANT WILL BE EXPECTED TO:
  • have a body of quality work in any genre
  • be able to demonstrate ability to achieve the proposed project.
  • be available for a four-week period between July- December 2012.
  • provide a brief progress report during the residency
  • sign a tenancy agreement and comply with the terms and conditions of that agreement.
  • be responsible for their own transport and food during their stay.
  • acknowledge Writing Australia, CAL and other partners for the region in any resulting publications
  • support Writing Australia by acting as ambassadors for the program in the future.

The selection process will take place in June with the announcement of the successful applicants in July 2012.
