Part of the Brimbank Writers Festival, the Brimbank Writers Awards recognise writing talent in Brimbank. The Awards are open to all persons who live, work or study in Brimbank and there is no charge to enter. Over $3,500 in prizes to be won!

AWARD CATEGORIES

Adult Short Story (18 years & over) - Up to 3,000 words
1st Prize $700 cash
2nd Prize $350 cash
Highly commended $200 voucher

Teenage Short Story (13-17 years) - Up to 2,000 words
1st Prize $250 cash
2nd Prize $125 cash
Highly commended $60 voucher

Children’s Short Story (8-12 years) - Up to 1,000 words
1st Prize $100 cash
2nd Prize $50 cash
Highly commended $25 voucher

ESL (English as a Second Language) Short Story - Up to 1,500 words

Entries submitted to the ESL category are open to all people whose second language is English. Entrants must state length of time they have lived in Australia and their age.

Adult Poetry (18 years & over) - Up to 300 words
1st Prize $400 cash
2nd Prize $200 cash

Teenage Poetry (13-17 years) - Up to 300 words

Highly commended $40 voucher

Children’s Poetry (8-12 years) - Up to 300 words
1st Prize $60 cash

Highly commended $20 voucher

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

• Entry is via online Entry Form only. Authors must complete the Entry Form available at
www.brimbank.vic.gov.au/writersfestival and attach an electronic fi le (ie .doc or .rtf) of their
story or poem;

• Entries are to be:

– Typed in 12 point Arial font, in black type;
– Double spaced;
– In sentence case (not all upper case);
– Not in italics except where necessary;
– Within the prescribed word limit;
– Original unpublished work of the author; and,
– Text only; Illustrations and images are not permitted.

• Authors must state word count on the Entry Form;

• One entry per person. Authors may submit one poetry entry and one short story entry;

• Where the author is submitting one poetry and one short story entry; separate Entry Forms must be submitted;

• The author must live, work or study in Brimbank;

• Winning authors will need to supply proof of residency, work or study in Brimbank;

• Employees of Brimbank City Council, and their immediate family members, are ineligible to submit an entry;

• Contractors and sponsors of the Writers Awards and Writers Festival, and their immediate family members, are ineligible to submit an entry;

• Entries submitted to the ESL (English as a Second Language) category are open to people who have been in Australia less than fi ve years and for whom English is not their fi rst language. Please state length of time lived in Australia on entry;

• Organisers reserve the right to withdraw any unsuitable entry;

• Where age conditions apply, entrants must be of the required age as at 20 July 2012. Winning entrants will need to supply proof of age, where necessary;

• The author’s name must appear ONLY on the Entry Form and not on the short story or poem;

• Entries will be judged by Tony Birch (short stories) and Amy Espeseth (poetry);

• The judges’ decisions are fi nal;

• The names of winning authors and copies of their winning entries may be published by Brimbank City Council and any media sponsors;

• By entering you agree to have your work published and available to be viewed by the public; and,

• Entries close at 5pm Friday 20 July 2012.
