The New Galilee Gilkey Potato Festival is offering the 1st annual juried Poetry Contest for the Potato Festival. All entries will be accepted in this inaugural year to showcase the tremendous range of poetic talent in the Western Pennsylvania region. Cash prizes will be awarded the 1st prize winners as determined by Michael Wurster of the Pittsburgh Poetry Exchange, Jennine Gleghorn, a highly rated English teacher at Mohawk High School, and Carolyn Fitzpatrick, a Gilkey family representative. Poetry will be exhibited through out the Potato Festival, August 17th – 19th.
ELIGIBILITY: Entries are limited to poets’ 9 – 105 years old living within 50-mile radius of New Galilee, PA.
DELIVERY: Poetry must be received by August 11th and can be sent to or delivered to Potato Festival, New Galilee Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 222, 606 Centennial Ave., New Galilee, Pa. 16141. Poems can also be e-mailed to margaretcboyer@gmail.com. Poem must have entry form attached with poet’s contact information.
NOTIFICATION: Winners will be notified Friday evening, August 17th. Winners will have the opportunity to ride in the parade at 10:00 on August 18th and will be presented awards on August 18th.
POETRY RULES: Poem must be original and completed within the last three years. Poetry must have potatoes as a theme. New Galilee Gilkey Potato Festival retains the right to use all poems in a published work of potato poetry.
