Freelance writing: AR Sportsman's Guide Magazine (Arkansas outdoor, hunting, heritage/ conservation | pay: $65-$160 per article)
Details:
Ar Sportsman’s Guide aims to be the definitive Arkansas outdoor publication. While hunting and fishing will be the predominate focus, we will also feature stories about conservation, hiking, camping, natural heritage, and other facets of outdoor Arkansas. Ar Sportsman’s guide will publish six issues per year.

As an Arkansas publication, ArSG has an Arkansas flavor and we would prefer writers and photographers with Arkansas experience and stories. That being said, ArSG recognizes that many outdoor stories and tactics fall beyond Arkansas borders. Work that best pertains to Arkansas will always be considered the strongest candidates for publication.

QUERIES AND SUBMISSIONS

We will look at all submissions, but if you really want to start off on the right foot send a query first. Please submit an e-mail query to jsainjr.gtr@gmail.com If your query strikes us as a winner, you will be contacted via email. If you don’t respond in a timely manner we will move on to the next writer.

The editor reserves the right to propose exactly what we expect in terms of substance, angle, style, length, sidebars, and of course deadlines. The key in this undertaking is communication. We want to ensure that both the writer and the editor are on the same page in regards to what is expected. No one wants to waste his or her time either writing or trying to edit a piece that is not a good fit for ArSG. We welcome the opportunity to work with new/un-established writers.

All written content submissions will be in Word format. All photo submissions must be at a minimum of 300dpi.

COVER PHOTOS: Photos considered for the magazine cover will pertain to one or more feature stories. Cover photos pay $125.

FEATURES: Feature stories can be instructive, informative, or just entertaining. Word count will need to be 1000-1400 words not including sidebars. Pay for feature articles is $125. Sidebars should consist of no more than 300 words and will warrant additional pay of $35. Inclusion of a sidebar will be at the discretion of the editor. Lead feature photos pay $25. Accompanying photos pay $10.

DEPARTMENT COLUMNS: Department columns open to free-lance writers will consist of 600-800 words and will pay $65. Photos pay $10. Departments slated for ArSG so far include:
  • Arkansas Conservation – News about non-profit and non-government conservation efforts in Arkansas
  • The Arkansas Naturalist – A column about natural and native things in Arkansas including plants, animals, minerals, etc. This column needs to be informative yet written in a concise and easily understood manner.
  • Recipes – Any recipe that involves wild game or ingredients gathered in the wild will be considered. Writers must include photos.
  • Gear Review – This department may feature one piece of gear or multiple pieces of gear. Certain items will be assigned to specific writers due to that writer’s expertise, but queries are welcome.

Photos: Sometimes, for a variety of reasons, photos submitted by writers will not meet the criteria for publication. In these cases other photographs supplied by other photographers may be used in conjunction with a written piece. The editor will make this decision.

PAYMENT: Any submission chosen for publication will receive an email confirmation. When your final completed article or photograph is submitted to the editor, please email an itemized invoice complete with address and phone number to george@wmpmarketing.com . All invoices will be paid upon publication of the issue in which your work will appear.
