KUA is open for pitch submissions for its second issue Displacement.
KUA is a six-issued publication project investigating themes of universal human conditions through the lens of transnational experiences. The first issue, titled Re-Integration focused on the experiences of the returned migrant*. Through personal stories, artworks, and essays, it investigates transnational identities across different socioeconomic backgrounds, explores the feeling of estrangement individuals may endure from returning to a first-culture after a long period of absence. With the support from Asymmetry Art Foundation, Chisenhale Gallery and Delfina Foundation, KUA 01 focus on multiple ties of transnationals’ cultural contexts and communities resulted by technological means or policy shifting. KUA 02 will be self funded and have a limited print run of 200 copies and available online. All sell revenue will go towards our contributors.
The second issue, KUA 02: Displacement will examine the relationship between migrants* and the
environment. The jump-of point is the waste importation ban in China in 2017 which caused the
neighbouring countries such as Malaysia and Taiwan to peak in their capacity in digesting the plastic
wastes from Europe and North America while these two countries shared a steady decline in their net
migration ever since the same year. How does one internalise and respond to the immigrational guilt
and environmental racism when something is thrown ‘away’ and ended in their other homes?
Expanding on the term displacement, the second issue will investigate a wide spectrum of non-
human movements and dislocations organized to serve human-centric propose. We are seeking work from artists, writers and researchers to share their theoretical, aesthetic, emotional or journalistic
work through considering displaced waste, animals, (non)organisms, wealth, drugs and further.

- You (or your parents/children) must have an lived experience of international relocation
- The work submitted must be original and not published elsewhere (online or in print)
- Pitches sent in will be a small sample or summary of your proposed work
- The work selected will receive £ 40 - 100 and one copy of KUA 02
- Deadline for pitching: 30 January 2023, 23:59.
- Pitch will be selected by 13 February and the final work submitted by 28 February 2023.
- Text submissions: Essays, papers, reviews, literature, interviews. Maximum 3000 words in total
- Image submission: All printable work including infographics or moving images with QR codes Maximum 4 pages
- Audio submission: Sonic-based work, interviews, readings, and music tracks. Maximum 15 minutes
- Mix or other formats: Google Maps, Apps, Games, Sticker packs or a mixture of mediums that could be hosted by print and online
